From Volleyball To Economics

She was born in 1957 in Stoke-on-Trent, England. As a child, she was so brilliant at volleyball and other games that she received a scholarship to St. Hilda’s College, Oxford. Philosophy, Politics, and Economics were her main subjects.

In 1979, she finished. She joined a large pension fund in London. Her next job was as a National Institute of Economic and Social Studies study officer. She became Ford Motor Company’s chief European economist and, subsequently, the Confederation of British Industry’s chief economic consultant.

In addition, she served on the Panel of Independent Economic Advisers at HM Treasury and the Yorkshire Building Society board without operating the business.

Role at the Bank of England

2001 Kate Barker joined the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee outside. The committee adjusts interest rates to suit government inflation goals. In 2010, she was the only outsider to serve three terms.

Kate had strong, autonomous opinions and regularly disagreed with the committee. She also became an expert on housing and planning issues, so the government requested her to perform two evaluations.

She proposed several measures to increase home availability and affordability and improve land use planning in her 2004 and 2006 reports.

In 2014, she published Housing: Where’s the Plan? Which advocated for a longer-term housing policy. Kate Barker has won several economic and social prizes and medals. She was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire at 30.

Kate was awarded the CBE in 2006 and she is also a Social Sciences Academy member. She has two children and a husband. She lives in Surrey, England.
