In Fullerton, California, Kelly Cheng Claes was born on September 18, 1995. She started playing volleyball young and fell in love. Indoor volleyball was Kelly’s sport at El Dorado High School in Placentia, California.
The Orange County Register awarded her Player of the Year in 2012. Kelly played beach volleyball at USC. In her second year, Kelly Cheng and former partner Sara Hughes won the AVCA Pairs National Championship.
Chris Kelly was AVCA All-American 2015. Kelly and Hughes led USC to two NCAA titles in 2016 and 2017 as juniors and seniors. Furthermore, Kelly earned a sociology degree from USC in 2017.
Professional Career
Kelly’s professional career began in 2018 when she won her first AVP Gold Series Championships in Chicago with college partner Sara Hughes. The duo became the youngest team to win an AVP event. Hughes split from Cheng in early 2018.
Kelly then teamed up with Sarah Sponcil. The pair won gold in Sochi and Ostrava and silver in The Hague at the 2019 FIVB four-star event. They qualified for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Achievements
Kelly and her partner Sara Hughes earned bronze, silver, and gold at the 2013 U19, 2014, and 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. They also won 2016 and 2017 NCAA titles.
