Watch Queen’s University’s men’s volleyball team if you appreciate volleyball. The Gaels are making noise in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference and want the national crown in 2024.
This blog article will discuss the history, current tam and coaching staff and goals and challenges for 2024 of Queens men’s volleyball.
Brief History of Queen’s Men’s Volleyball
Since 1969, Queens men’s volleyball team has been an OUA powerhouse. Gaels’ 14th OUA title was their most recent in 2020. They won two bronze medals in 1977 and 2011 15 U Sports national championships.
The Gaels have produced several excellent players. Brett Hagarty was OUA player of the year in 2020, and Zane Grossinger earned a 2021 Canadian national team selection.
Current Roster and Coaching Staff
The Gaels have a diverse 2023–2024 team. Team captain and setter Zane Grossinger is in his fifth and final year. Brett Hagarty, Adam Boljkovac, and Joel Rudd are experienced, powerful hitters who play with him.
Middle blocker Liam Butchereit from Dalhousie University and defender Alex Mrkalj from Serbia are good newcomers.
The teaching staff is excellent in Queens men’s volleyball. Gabriel DeGroot began coaching the team in 2016 and is a fantastic leader. Mike Tomlinson and Markus Trence, former Gaels players, assist him and contribute their expertise.
Emma Hagarty manages the team, Matt St. Louis coaches strength and conditioning, and Sarah Roney is an athletic therapist.
Goals and Challenges for 2024
The Gaels are excited about the 2023–2024 season to defend their OUA title and win the national crown. Because they work hard and help each other off the court, the players are close and want to win.
Many fans attend all ARC home games to support the club. However, the Gaels face issues. One issue is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has altered their training and competing schedules.
The team faces challenging opponents like McMaster University, the national champion, and Ryerson University, the OUA runner-up. The team must balance school and sports because they are full-time Queen’s students.
